Smallest and quietest PC for industrial and commercial use

13 March 2002 Computer/Embedded Technology

Digital-Logic is offering what it says is one of the smallest and quietest PCs for industrial and commercial applications. The computer has dimensions of only 159 x 148 x 66 mm (weighs 2 kg) and is equipped with the latest low-power components. It uses high-performance low-voltage Pentium-CPUs and a passive cooling system. Since no fan is installed, the noise level is extremely low (<35 dB).

The MICROSPACE-PC is at present available in two versions: The 'PC30' model is based on a 700 MHz Celeron processor and has a 128 KB L2 cache and 128 MB memory. Also integrated are two PS/2 interfaces for keyboard and mouse, two USB interfaces, and ports for printer, COM1 and COM2. The PC is equipped with a 2,5" hard disk with a capacity of 20 GB and a CD drive as mass storage media. Additional peripheral devices and mass storage media such as digital camera, CD-RW and DVD-RW can be connected via Firewire IEEE1394 to the front of the PC. In addition, the PC offers a 100/10Base-T (RJ45) LAN interface. The Microspace-PC also supports an optional smartcard reader that provides protection for booting and data access using the latest ISO7816 smartcards.

For display, it supports an analog or LCD SVGA monitor via VGA connector or a television screen via TV-Out on the rear. It provides an optional LVDS port with a serial interface for special applications like digital LCDs with touch screen. The appropriate Video BIOS (VGA, TV, LVDS) for the port used is loaded automatically. Temperature range is +5 to +35°C, and it is tested for shock and vibration up to 10G (without HD/CD/DVD). Windows ME operating system is pre-installed.

Digital-Logic's flagship computer is the PC31 - a variant of the PC30 with a 700 MHz Pentium-III processor, 256 KB L2 cache, 256 MB memory, DVD drive and ISDN interface.

These PCs are designed for continuous operation - power consumption is typically 40 W.
