Tantalum chip capacitor in 0603

26 Jan 2000 Passive Components

Component maker AVX can offer the world's smallest tantalum capacitor - an 0603 chip that eliminates the welded lead frame common in conventional tantalum devices. Designated as the TACmicrochip series, these surface mount capacitors offer the industry's highest volumetric efficiency, with CV ratings of 1,0 µF at 10 V in an 0603 chip size, claims AVX.

The TACmicrochip series achieves this performance through its innovative construction. The active tantalum element comprises just 30% of volume of a lead frame device and AVX says it increases this volume to more than 70% thus dramatically reducing the overall size of the capacitor. Increased contact area results in a reduction of equivalent series resistance (ESR) producing ESR values for the TACmicrochip series of just 100 Ohm at 100 kHz for the 0603 - or a reduction of 3,5x that of conventionally-produced tantalum capacitors.

Typical CV specifications for the TACmicrochip series include some of the industry's highest, such as 1,0 µF at 10 V; 1,5 µF at 6,3 V; 2,2 µF at 4 V; 3,3 µF at 3 V; and 4,7 µF at 2 V with typical ESR values of to 10 Ohm (at 100 kHz).
