Industry alliance provides SA with instant access to global markets

Europe *Star, the joint venture between Alcatel Spacecom of France and Loral Space & Communications of the USA, has established a powerful new Ku band antenna in conjunction with Alliance Communications to provide local business with a new range of services for 'occasional use' feeds and permanent video leases. Operated by Telemedia, this antenna will also provide South Africa with instant access to five global markets, encouraging regional transmissions between southern Africa, the Middle East, Europe, South East Asia and the Indian sub-continent.
Roy Ingle, Europe *Star's Regional Director for Africa, explains the benefits of the investment: "We have identified South Africa as a hub for video services in and out of Africa. By joining forces with local partners, Alliance Communications and Telemedia, Europe *Star is able to provide quality ground segment facilities to South African business."
Mark Gray, Regional Manager Africa, for Alliance Communications and Peter Bretherick, Managing Director of Telemedia, are equally positive about the joint project: "The potential for live feeds is enormous. For example, we can now stream live news events or sports matches directly from where they are happening to the Europe *Star antenna at Telemedia in Johannesburg, where they would then be sent via fibre to JSM-tower. Using the same antenna, the same signal can be transmitted simultaneously to other broadcasters around the world. In today's ever-shrinking global landscape, instant access to news as it happens is vital for businesses to remain competitive."
The new antenna was unveiled at a function at the Telemedia offices in Rivonia in November.
