Wireless motion sensors

Finland-based Suunto has selected Nordic Semiconductor’s award-winning nRF52832 Bluetooth low energy System-on-Chip (SoC) for Movesense, an open environment for developers of wireless motion sensing solutions for application in the sports, activity tracking, health, logistics, gaming, and many other segments. Using Movesense, developers can design end-user applications without needing hardware development or RF Design expertise.

The Movesense platform comprises a versatile, programmable multifunction sensor that incorporates nine-axis motion (accelerometer, gyroscope and magnetometer) as well as temperature, heart rate and electrocardiography (ECG) sensing in a 36,6 by 36,6 by 10,6 mm form factor. A smart connector allows the sensor to be attached to clothing or integrated into apparel, offering an embedded solution with an individual ID that can be used for performing context-specific applications. A soft module with electrodes for integrating heart rate sensing into apparel is also available.

A professionally managed application programming interface (API) and software libraries allow developers to build applications using the sensor and develop associated iOS and Android mobile apps. The nRF52832 SoC provides the Bluetooth low energy wireless connectivity between the sensor and Bluetooth 4.0 (and later) smartphones and tablets. The chip’s 64 MHz, 32-bit ARM Cortex M4F processor features ample performance to run both the Movesense platform’s application software and the Bluetooth low energy RF protocol software.

The shock and water-resistant Movesense sensor weighs only 10 grams, and is powered by a replaceable CR 2025 Li-ion battery. The nRF52832 SoC has also been engineered to minimise power consumption with features such as the 2,4 GHz radio’s 5,5 mA peak Rx/Tx currents and a fully automatic power management system.
