Tier 1 and Tier 2 fibre certifier

31 January 2017 Test & Measurement

The 3rd generation FTBx-940/945 is EXFO’s newest optical loss test set (OLTS) for streamlining fibre certification and testing. Optimised for fibre certification in data centres and enterprise networks, the module is housed in the FTB-2 platform, which can also accommodate an optical time-domain reflectometer (OTDR) providing an all-in-one test set for advance fibre certification in Tier 1 and Tier 2 applications.

When characterising high volumes of fibre links, technicians need to be as fast and accurate as possible to minimise testing time and operating expenses. A pass/fail diagnostic based on total insertion loss (IL), optical reflection loss (ORL) and fibre length using an OLTS usually provides the fastest characterisation. However, for Tier 2 testing, i.e., when it is time to troubleshoot a failed link or to test reflectance (increasingly important with 100G migration), the use of an OTDR is recommended. Having both the OLTS and the OTDR in the same test set is a major time saver, and helps technicians in choosing the most appropriate tester for each situation.

Another solution is the new all-in-one OLTS and OTDR combo available on EXFO’s FTB-1. Simultaneously, the company also launched the FTBx-940/945 Telco OLTS.
