Smart light bulbs adjust to sleep cycles

27 January 2016 Opto-Electronics

With intelligent lighting being one of the key drivers towards the ‘smart home’ of the future, GE Lighting has unveiled a connected lighting system that even adjusts its behaviour to synchronise with the human sleep cycle, or circadian rhythm.

Dubbed ‘C by GE’ and being marketed directly to consumers, the LED light bulbs are Bluetooth enabled and can be controlled without using a smart hub. To complement this new lighting technology, GE is also providing users with an app with light scenes and application recommendations. Compatibility with Wink also allows consumers to program C by GE to interact with other smart devices throughout the home.

Two products are currently available in the portfolio. C Sleep, a bulb with three distinct settings, creates the perfect bedroom light – warm and calm at night; crisp and vibrant in the morning. According to GE, the warm, calm night light prepares one for sleep, increasing the body’s production of melatonin. Then in the morning, cool, vibrant light reduces production of melatonin, helping one feel energised and awake.

C Life, a more affordable, everyday LED bulb, gives consumers an easy way to light their intelligent home, creating optimal light for general applications such as cooking, working or just hanging out.

The products are currently priced only in US dollars, and as expected they don’t come cheap: C Life bulbs retail for $15 dollars while C Sleep costs an eye-opening $25.
