High-power TO-220 heatsinks

24 October 2001 Power Electronics / Power Management

With faster microprocessors requiring higher power than previous chips, Aavid has teamed its heatsink capabilities with existing voltage regulators so one does not have to redesign the motherboard. Aavid designed the 5820 Series to work with 15,4 W, High-Power TO-220 regulators such as Linear Technology's LT1580 and LT1575. Although the higher-power regulators require additional heat dissipation, this heatsink is a drop-in replacement for previous designs. One can keep the rest of the system the same, since the 5820 Series uses natural convection for cooling.

Features are: compact design, eliminating the need for board redesign; natural convection cooling (no forced air flow required); threaded mounting insert for quick installation of the TO-220; pre-installed Kon-Dux thermal interface pad for quick installation and to provide an excellent thermal interface between the TO-220 and the heatsink; anodised finish for maximum heat dissipation; standoff pins provide solid mounting support for the heatsink and TO-220.
