With the communications market demanding greater data rates and more capacity at lower cost, the need for new high-performance emitters and detectors has never been greater, says Hamamatsu. The company has addressed this demand with a new range of products.
As part of this range, red LEDs (L7726) with matched Photo ICs (S7727) have been designed for high-speed POF (plastic optical fibre) communications. Due to its advantages of low cost and easy termination, plastic fibre is a possible solution for data transmission over short distances of only a few metres. Both the L7726 and the S7727 have applications in everyday plastic fibre communications, such as FA, office machines, home automation and LAN, but can now be used for data transmission in locations subject to high electromagnetic noise.
Hamamatsu provides the L7726 red LED with an emitting wavelength suited for low loss transmission through plastic fibre. It has a high-speed response of typically 100 MHz and a high output power. The matched Photo IC, the S7727, are of monolithic construction to ensure high resistance to external noise as well as high reliability. The Photo IC also provides P-ECL voltage conversion output and has data transmission rates up to 156 Mbps.
Both devices are moulded into miniature plastic packages with lenses, allowing easy and efficient coupling to a POF, enabling low-noise digital output.
