DC-DC buck power module

25 February 2015 Power Electronics / Power Management

The MPM3684 from Monolithic Power Systems is a 15 A step-down (buck) power module with integrated DC-DC converter, power inductor and input/output capacitors in a 12 x 15 x 4 mm QFN package. As few as two external components (one resistor and one capacitor) are required for a complete power solution.

The device can deliver 15 A output current over a wide input supply voltage range with excellent load and line regulation. It uses constant-on-time control to provide fast transient response and ease loop stabilisation. The default under-voltage lockout threshold is internally set around 4,1 V, but a resistor network on the enable pin can raise this threshold. Protection features include over-current protection, over-voltage protection and thermal shutdown.

The MPM3684 incorporates an internal LDO to power the control circuits and the integrated power devices; this LDO can be disabled by an external 5 V source to boost efficiency. It has an internal 3 ms soft-start timer which can be extended using an extra capacitor. An open drain ‘power good’ signal indicates that the output voltage is within the nominal voltage range.
