Cape ECM assembling a solid base for further growth

Six years since publicly announcing its arrival on the South African electronics contract manufacturing (ECM) scene, and seven years since its inception, Montar Manufacturing has made smart use of its steady growth by reinvesting in the business’s future, while staying true to its founding values.

According to founder Riëtte Hauptfleisch, the Cape Town based company’s capacity has more than tripled in the past couple of years. “This was required to keep up with a growing customer base and with existing customers growing in their own right,” she explains.

Key to this growth has been a dedication to ensuring that its quality control systems continually mature to meet the standards demanded by its customers. To this end, core staff members have achieved inspection and soldering certifications per IPC-A-610 and IPC-STD-J-001E, and are tasked with passing their knowledge and experience on to other staff members.

Montar currently enjoys the support of more than 100 loyal clients across a diverse cross-section of market sectors. Principal among these is the huge GSM/GPRS telemetry market, while mining and RF applications are also areas the company is involved in. Another reliable source of business is a firm partnership with a mainline bus service, for which Montar makes a range of products, from LED displays to more intricate devices.

In the challenging and often cutthroat local ECM industry, Hauptfleisch attributes the company’s success to its willingness to go above and beyond. “We are the type of company that would gladly make a plan to help our customers out (and usually at the drop of a hat) - that sets us apart,” she says.

“With over 13 years of experience in the soldering industry, we are experts in the field of prototyping and small to medium size runs. We offer our expertise and knowledge in manufacturability for mass production as free advice to customers making the transition from prototyping to larger production runs. Simple jobs, tricky modifications, you name it... we will do it or die trying.”

Since 2010, Montar Manufacturing has acquired a larger factory to house its wave soldering machine, reflow oven and trusty Mydata TP9 pick-and-place machine. Remaining loyal to the Mydata brand (now known as Mychronic), the company’s newest addition - a My12 pick-and-place machine capable of placing 21 000 components per hour - enables it to do high-volume orders. The next string to be added to Montar’s bow will be a harness and loom manufacturing service which is currently in the planning phase.

More so even than the investments the company continues to make in its growth, Hauptfleisch believes Montar Manufacturing’s ability to stay true to its vision will stand it in good stead. “Since our inception we have worked to get where we are; we had no capital or nest egg to fall back on. We are blessed to have reached each goal we have set for ourselves and the company, and are driven and motivated to continue on this path of success, because ECM is our passion, it’s a challenge, it’s fun and we live for it,” she concludes.
