SMD common mode chokes for data lines

26 September 2001 Passive Components

Vacuumschmelze's new series of very compact common mode chokes provides superior common mode attenuation for EMI reduction, improves board space and shortens the length of PCB traces important for space-limited or sensitive board designs. The chokes can be used in 2-wire line applications (package 5011), eg xDSL, ISDN U-interface as well as in all 4-wire line applications (package 5012), eg T1/E1, ISDN S-interface. Compared to existing designs, a reduction in size by about 50% has been achieved, claims Vacuumschmelze.

By using a new generation of amorphous miniature tape-wound cores the new surface mountable chokes offer a superior alternative to other ferrite common mode chokes due to their higher impedance and attenuation over the broader frequency ranges found in telecom circuitry. These small-footprint, low profile common mode chokes have a current range up to 300 mA. As a self-leaded component, the new casing 5011 has no internal solder connection, which increases reliability throughout the manufacturing process and in the telecom application.

Dielectric strength is rated at 500 V r.m.s. The parts can also be tailored to address application-specific noise signature specifications.
