LED lighting power sources with PFC

27 August 2014 Power Electronics / Power Management

New power-factor corrected (PFC) power supplies have been released by Mean Well for LED lighting applications in the 90 W range. The NPF-90, NPF-90D and PWM-90 series – each with a single output – feature startup times shorter than 500 ms and no-load power consumption less than 0,5 W (less than 0,15 W for NPF-90).

The NPF-90 exploits a constant-voltage (CV), constant-current (CC) design that makes it suitable for the majority of LED lighting applications; the NPF-90D further provides a 3-in-1 dimming function that enables adjustment of light intensity via 0 – 10 V d.c., PWM or resistance signals.

The PWM-90 range uses a CV design and provides a pulse width modulated (PWM) output as well as dimming via a 0 – 10 V d.c. or PWM signal, meaning it is well suited to operation with LED strips or LED luminaries using current limiting resistors and supplying a complete dimming function at the same time.

The units are all categorised Class II (no FG), with an input accepting the full 90 – 305 V a.c. range and an output supplying the most common DC voltages required for LED lighting units or strips. They are housed in 94V-0 flame retardant plastic enclosures with an interior fully filled with heat conductive silicone.

With operating efficiencies up to 91%, the power supplies can operate between -40°C and +70°C using free air convection. Their protection functions include short circuit, overload or over-current, over-voltage and over-temperature. They are certified to internationally recognised UL and EN standards.
