3 A voltage regulator

4 September 2013 Power Electronics / Power Management

International Rectifier has introduced the IR3823 SupIRBuck integrated voltage regulator designed for space-constrained applications. It delivers up to 3 A in a compact 3,5 x 3,5 mm package and allows power conversion directly from a 12 V input for low-current point-of-load applications that require benchmark performance.

Efficiencies in excess of 97,5% are obtainable for designs converting power from a 6 V input to a 4,8 V output. The very high initial efficiency allows switching at up to 1,5 MHz from a 12 V supply to enable a complete 3 A power supply solution in less than 130 mm2.

Featuring constant frequency and virtually jitter-free operation with synchronisation capability, the new device is well suited to noise-sensitive applications, while its high bandwidth reduces component count to shrink PCB footprint. A tri-level selectable soft-start feature is also offered for ease of sequencing.

The IR3823 features programmable switching frequency from 300 kHz to 1,5 MHz. Other key functions include thermally compensated over-current protection, output over-voltage protection and thermal shutdown.
