Power analysis software for high-level programmable logic

18 July 2001 Programmable Logic

Xilinx has released XPower, power and thermal analysis software for programmable logic design. It now supports input from Model Technology's ModelSim HDL simulation and supports the Xilinx Virtex-II advanced FPGA family and XPLA3 family of CPLD logic devices. The simulation activity file can be used to set up the design nets in XPower, with the result that the engineer spends less time in the set-up process, and power estimates are more accurate. By linking XPower with the popular ModelSim family of products, customers can simulate more designs, more accurately, according to the company.

Power estimation for high-density devices

The addition of the Virtex-II device family to XPower means network and communications designers can now accurately estimate the power consumption of their designs early in the design process, an indispensable capability for electronics products using multiple logic devices and crowded circuit boards. XPower now supports the Virtex, Virtex-II, Virtex-E and Spartan-II families of FPGA devices. XPower also supports the Xilinx XPLA3 low-power family of CPLD devices. Power consumption is a primary design consideration in battery-driven and handheld products.

XPower reads in either pre-routed or post-routed design data, and provides accurate device power estimation either by net, or for the overall device. Results are provided either in report or graphic format. XPower represents a significant step up in power estimation from the typical static web-based programs available from the majority of logic vendors.
