Innovative Bluetooth babyboard demonstrator kits

4 July 2001 Design Automation

Philips Semiconductors has launched an easy-to-use Bluetooth babyboard demonstrator kit - claimed to be the smallest of its kind on the market. The babyboard enables customers to develop their upper layer software in a safe test environment.

The babyboard has been developed in partnership with Philips Consumer Communications (PCC) and is targeted at customers who are developing their own Bluetooth-enabled products and prototypes. Applications range from communications and computing to automotive and home appliances. It will also be useful to distributors wanting to demonstrate Philips Semiconductors' chips in action.

The babyboard is based on the Philips PCF 87750 baseband controller (Blueberry) and UAA3558 radio chip. No external CODECs or Flash memory are needed. Philips Semiconductors is now working on derivatives for dedicated data (including PCs, cellular, PDA) and voice applications (headset, loudspeaker).

Another key component on the babyboard is the UAA3558 BiCMOS IC, which is a single chip transceiver IC with a high sensitivity. It features a fully integrated receiver, from antenna filter output to the demodulated data output, an integrated VCO, a synthesizer to implement Bluetooth channel frequencies and a transmitter pre-amplifier to drive either the switch diode to an antenna or a power amplifier.

Two kits will be available: the reduced kit, which consists of two babyboards, two supply cables for point to point application; and the full kit, which consists of three babyboards, three supply cables for point to multipoint application.
