Texas Instruments is enabling contactless temperature measurement in portable consumer electronics with a single-chip passive infrared (IR) MEMS temperature sensor. The TMP006 provides electronics manufacturers with the ability to accurately measure device case temperature using IR technology. This promises to offer features and benefits over the common approach of approximating case temperature based on system temperature. The IC can also be used to measure temperature outside the device, enabling new features and user applications.
The TMP006 integrates an on-chip MEMS thermopile sensor, signal conditioning, a 16-bit analog-to-digital-converter, local temperature sensor and voltage references on a 1,6 x 1,6 mm chip. It consumes 240 quiescent current and 1 μA in shutdown mode, and supports a wide temperature range of -40°C to +125°C with an accuracy of ±0,5°C on the local sensor and ±1°C for the passive IR sensor. The IC includes an I²C/SMBus digital interface.
