Microchip has expanded its family of standalone real-time clock/calendars (RTCCs). The MCP7940N offers battery switchover and timestamp for accurate timekeeping, digital trimming for time-of-day calibration and 64 Bytes of SRAM. In certain applications, the device’s features can be used to maintain time and alarm settings when the main power is turned off, while in other applications, it addresses the need for a real-time clock with a power-fail monitor to capture and store the timeframes when the main power fails. The digital trimming feature can support software temperature compensation, which lowers costs compared to using devices in which temperature compensation takes place in hardware.
