Motor feedback encoders

23 June 2010 Switches, Relays & Keypads

Countapulse Controls now offers Hengstler motor feedback encoders for demanding feedback applications and for use on brushless servo motors and stepper motors. Acuro-Drive is a fully digital motor-integrated encoder with an open BiSS interface. There are two devices in the range – a 22 mm diameter unit for DC and stepper motors and the AC110 with 50 mm hollow shaft for asynchronous motors and elevators.

The heart of the absolute encoder is a sensor unit that forms the common basis of all industrial and motor feedback encoders and is centred around an all-new opto ASIC design. Both single- and multiturn versions are accommodated in the same compact 58 mm industry-standard size housing. The design also features improved safety through the self-diagnostic functions as well as through a reduced number of solder joints and the use of simulation-optimised toothed wheels or heavy duty ball bearings. In addition, a wide range of permissible operating temperatures offers enhanced operating safety with highly integrated motor feedback systems in the -40°C to +120°C temperature range.

Integrated sensors monitor the signal intensity and send control or warning messages when the first signs of a malfunction are detected, as may be the case if predefined limits are reached due to a contaminated coding disk or lens, or if the light source intensity has deteriorated due to ageing. A single-step operation performs a plausibility check of each individual increment of the internal signal processing while a code check ensures that the encoder signal returns the acquired sense of rotation bit by bit. The geared optical multiturn part is immune to magnetic interference from brakes and welding systems.

Acuro allows safe communication with all common fieldbus formats and open interfaces. Point-to-point communication, such as SSI and parallel, as well as fieldbuses such as Profibus, DeviceNet, CAN, CANopen and Interbus are available. The new manufacturer-independent BiSS interface is included in each standard SSI encoder while the new bidirectional BiSS sensor interface is used for demanding motor feedback applications.
