DIP DC/DC converters

14 April 2010 Power Electronics / Power Management

Recom has designed a range of DC/DC-converters in a DIP24 case that offers 10 kV d.c. (5 kV a.c.) isolation.

At the heart of this development is a new transformer concept, based on ‘Re3-Inforced’ technology. Although smaller than conventional transformers, this design features triple isolated transformer windings. The winding capacity has also been reduced by a factor of 3 down to 20 pF. This feature ensures low leakages as required in medical applications, where the electronic circuit is in contact with the patient.

These new converter families have power ratings of 3,5 W (REC 3.5 series) and 6 W (REC 6 series) and reach an 86% efficiency level. The maximum ambient operating temperature without de-rating and with natural convection cooling is specified at +85°C for the REC 3.5. For the more powerful REC 6 the ambient operating temperature is +75°C. The case temperature can reach up to +105°C.

All converters feature permanent short circuit and overload protection and conform to EN, CSA and CB specifications. They are available with the two most common pin-outs and can optionally be delivered with under-voltage protection and a remote pin.

Apart from medical applications, these highly insulated converters are also suited for industrial applications such as energy and high-voltage applications or in IGBT circuits.
