Less Pb, less Pd in capacitors

There has been recent pressure to eliminate lead (Pb) from products for environmental reasons and moves to reduce dependency on palladium (Pd). Both objectives are achieved with new components from Murata containing no Pb or Pd. SMD three-terminal capacitors are among the most popular and effective EMI filters in digital products, being so much more effective than ferrite beads, says Murata. However, until now, plates were made of Pd and some terminations contained Pb.

Murata has resolved these difficulties to produce three-terminal capacitors with tin (Sn) terminations and copper (Cu) electrodes. These give better performance due to the higher conductivity of Cu and better solderability due to the longer shelf life of Sn.
