Heavy-duty film capacitors

14 October 2009 Passive Components

Epcos has developed a series of MKT film capacitors characterised by ruggedness and low capacitance drift. After a 1000 hour test at 85°C, 85% relative air humidity and 240 V a.c., their maximum capacitance change is less than 10%.

The MKT film capacitors of the B3293* series cover a capacitance range from 0,1 to 10 μF and are designed for a nominal voltage of 305 V a.c. to IEC 60384-14. Their maximum operating temperature is 105°C. The types with capacitances of up to 2,2 μF have X2 safety certification (IEC 60384-14/EN 60384-14).

Possible applications for these new capacitors are those making high demands on reliability, such as in automotive electronics, or those in which an uncontrolled change in capacitance can lead to malfunction of the circuit. This is the case in capacitive power supplies where the capacitor operates in series with the power network. These capacitors can also be used in outdoor installations thanks to their high resistance to humidity. They are especially well suited for home appliances, power meters and smoke alarms, as well as for motion sensors and rolling shutters.
