Low-EMI boost regulator

2 September 2009 Power Electronics / Power Management

Micrel has launched the MIC2250, a high-efficiency step-up regulator boasting low electromagnetic interference (EMI). This boost regulator achieves up to 90% peak efficiency; at light loads as low as 1 mA, the device still maintains an impressive 83% efficiency, making it a good solution for Li-Ion battery powered systems. The solution supports an adjustable output voltage up to 32 V and is packaged in a tiny 2 x 2 mm exposed pad MLF.

An internal 900 mA power switch allows the MIC2250 to produce up to 250 mA of continuous output current at 15 V from a 5 V input supply; output accuracy is ±3%. The device features a user selectable dither mode to reduce peak switching EMI noise by as much as 10 dB. Featuring an operating input supply range from 2,5 V to 5,5 V, the 2,5 MHz part is suitable for applications powered by single cell Li-Ion battery, as well as 3,3 V and 5 V d.c. power sources. Additional features include under-voltage lockout, soft start and thermal shutdown.
