Cascaded SuperCap modules

2 September 2009 Passive Components

Wima’s double-layer capacitors are now available as cascaded modules in different configurations. For this purpose, several SuperCap units are combined to achieve high capacitances at a certain rated voltage. Active balancing is done by means of a comparator circuit integrated into the modules ex-factory to keep the individual cells in charged condition.

The typical application for SuperCap modules is the quick availability of 100 to 1000 A within a DC voltage range, for example in slip control of large wind power plants, for starting micro turbines, for startup of fuel cells, for starting very large V16 or V24 cylinder motors in train or naval drives, for energy storage in conjunction with photovoltaic devices, recuperation of braking energy in the automotive sector as well as parallel connection to batteries in vehicles or other applications.

Compared to traditional battery or charger solutions, SuperCaps are maintenance-free and are relatively lightweight. Due to their low ESR, SuperCap modules can be charged with very high currents for a short time and damage due to overload is excluded, provided the cell voltage is adhered to. If properly handled, SuperCap modules may have a lifetime of 10 years and more, and can withstand more than 500 000 charge/discharge cycles with an efficiency grade of over 90%.
