Converter boosts 0,9 V to 42 V

19 August 2009 Power Electronics / Power Management

New from austriamicrosystems is the AS1344 high-voltage DC-DC boost converter optimised for biasing photodiodes, LCD or PMOLED displays powered by single cell batteries.

At 15 V output voltage, the AS1344 delivers 120 mA from a 3 V or 28 mA from a 1,5 V input voltage. The IC operates from a single 0,9 to 3,6 V supply and provides adjustable output voltages in the range of 5,5 to 42 V. Its 1 MHz fixed switching frequency minimises the PCB footprint by allowing the use of tiny, low profile inductors and capacitors. This constant frequency switching also results in low, predictable output noise that can be easily filtered.

The device offers an automatic power save operation which improves efficiency at light loads, and its design reduces the operating supply current to only 22 μA. It offers both a 1 μA shutdown mode and an output disconnect feature. An adjustable soft-start feature enables powering up of applications even with drained batteries by limiting the input current during startup. The AS1344 offers 2% output voltage accuracy and a power-ok feature indicates when voltage is within 10% of regulation.
