AMPSEAL connectors from Tyco Electronics – known for their rugged reliability under high-temperature automotive and industrial applications – have been improved with a simpler assembly mechanism.
The difficult-to-apply, labour-intensive gasket has been replaced by bonding it to the header assembly.
Enhanced environmental sealing makes these heavy-duty connectors not only waterproof, but submersible as well. Intended for a wire-to-board system, the connectors are available in cable plugs and PC board-mounting headers, which are designed to be flange mounted.
The ready-to-use plug connector features a housing with a two-piece contact-holding design. This lock-in-place design provides terminal-position assurance against contact backout. After contacts are inserted into the housing, the housing snaps shut to firmly position all contacts. As added insurance against slippage, the connector will not shut unless all contacts are properly inserted.
The lanceless receptacle contacts eliminate tangling during storage and handling, and prevent damage to seals during assembly. They accept 20 to 16 AWG wire with 1,7 to 2,7 mm diameter thin-wall insulation. They also fit the bill for power applications, with a current rating of 17 A for gold-plated contacts and 8 A for tin-plated ones. The gold-plated contact can tolerate temperatures up to 125°C and tin-plated contacts up to 105°C.
The connectors use a three-row contact grid on 4 mm centre-lines in a 23-position configuration; a plastic seal plug can be used to plug empty contact cavities in applications requiring selective loading. When I/O requirements call for more than one connector, the 23-position AMPSEAL connector is keyed and colour coded for easy assembly. Available in black, white, blue and grey, a black plug cannot be plugged into a natural, blue, or grey header assembly, and like-wise for the other combinations.
AMPSEAL automotive connectors are designed for cost-effective, high-productivity assembly. Contacts are available in loose pieces or in strip form for fast termination by AMP semi-automatic or high-speed automatic equipment. An integral latch firmly holds mated connector halves together without the need for additional hardware. The solderable retention legs, or hold-downs, keep the header assembly firmly attached to the board before soldering and mechanically fastened to the board after soldering.
