32-bit MCU targets low-cost applications

22 July 2009 DSP, Micros & Memory

CML Microsystems has unveiled a new RISC/DSP microcontroller product from its specialist semiconductor and microprocessor daughter-company, Hyperstone.

The new E2 is a high-performance, RoHS compliant 32-bit microcontroller, with features such as a programmable serial communications engine, ADC unit and 32 KB of on-chip I-RAM, complemented by an external memory and peripheral interface controller.

Targeted at global industrial sensing and control applications, consumer applications, metering, scanning EPOS and other cost-sensitive applications, the E2 offers peak performance of 640 MOPS at 160 MHz and enhanced industrial reliability, with a price-performance ratio targeting designers wishing to move from an 8-bit microcontroller to the performance and design benefits of a 32-bit architecture.

Additionally, Hyperstone offers global technical design support and a development kit for the E2, to ensure ease of migration to the E2 and fast time-to-market. The development kit includes a populated board, software development tools (IDE), C/C++ compiler, linker, assembler, source-level debugger with profiler, runtime kernel and DSP library.

Key features of the MCU include dynamic frequency scaling, power-down and sleep modes, low power consumption (200 mW typical), high code density, programmable 8-channel serial communications engine, 10-bit 8-channel multiplexed A-D converter with a sample rate of 182 kHz, versatile 2-channel DMA and a realtime clock.
