Module measures optical dispersion in fibre networks

8 July 2009 Test & Measurement

JDSU has added a medium range optical dispersion measurement (MR-ODM) module to its T-BERD/MTS-6000 and -8000 platforms. This single plug-in module includes a patented solution for chromatic dispersion (CD) measurements and offers polarisation mode dispersion (PMD) and attenuation profile test functions.

The medium range of the ODM module’s combination of CD, PMD and attenuation test functions enables technicians to validate a fibre link’s compatibility with high-speed DWDM systems, including reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs). The performance of each individual function also makes the ODM module suitable for characterising fibre at 40G and higher in the metro and access network area.

The MR-ODM module is targeted at cable and telecom network operators deploying fibre networks to meet growing broadband demand. It provides measurement points across the SCL-bands (1450–1640 mm), has fast acquisition times, and is test capable through non-bidirectional components (EDFA, filters and similar components). It has internal and on-line wavelength referencing and has a single input port for any test configuration. The module is compatible with plug-in or handheld broadband sources at the far end of the fibre under test.
