Micron has introduced a serial NAND Flash memory technology providing embedded applications with the flexibility to upgrade their storage capacity. With chip density starting at 1 gigabit, the technology allows customers to cost-effectively extend their storage capacity beyond what is currently available with serial NOR Flash, and is said to provide a significant cost-per-bit advantage.
The NAND Flash is compatible with the industry standard serial peripheral interface (SPI) command set. Running at 2,64 MBps, it offers faster write performance than NOR Flash, which typically falls below 0,5 MBps. It provides security with a read-only area and protected block lock to prevent tampering with the content stored in the device.
Also notable is its on-chip error correction code (ECC), which makes implementing serial NAND easy and enables a greater range of potential applications. Since it utilises the same package type as parallel NAND, Micron’s serial NAND effectively acts as a transitional gateway for manufacturers to move from a serial into a parallel NAND interface, if and when needed.
