Serial device servers support redundancy

18 March 2009 Computer/Embedded Technology

Advantech has developed new EKI-1528 and EKI-1526 serial device servers, which combine a rugged design with fast 8/16 x RS232/422/485 serial ports, two x Ethernet ports and high throughput capabilities.

The device servers allow RS232/422/485 serial devices to be remotely monitored, managed and controlled over Ethernet and IP networks. They also include features such as simultaneous dual-LAN redundancy, multi-access functionality, support for DHCP/BOOTP communication protocol, SNMP, e-mail alarm functions, and others.

Each of the COM ports provides 921 Kbps with a throughput up to 1,2 Mbps, fulfilling high data transmission needs, even when all ports are up and running. With two Ethernet ports, users can establish two physical networks, one for the primary connection, and the other as a backup host that can connect to the device servers directly when the primary connection fails. The two Ethernet ports can also be set to two different networking domains to support various network applications.

The modules also provide various configuration interfaces, such as through a web browser, Telnet console, serial console or Windows utility. They also support SNMP configuration and SNMP traps so that they can be monitored and managed by general SNMP software. An e-mail alarm can be set up to automatically notify users in the event of an accident or status change.

The EKI-1528/1526 combine features such as COM port redirection, TCP server/client and UDP mode to fulfil advanced needs. Their multi-access functionality provides five host connections for each serial port, with broadcast and polling operations. In broadcast mode, they handle a command from one application and reply to the data from the serial port to all applications connected to this serial port. In polling mode; they handle the commands from one application and reply to this application only, while queries from other applications must be queued and wait for current process completion.
