Handheld spectrum analysers

21 January 2009 Test & Measurement

New from Rohde & Schwarz are two all-purpose instruments for mobile spectrum analysis: the R&S FSH4 and the R&S FSH8. Both analysers are rugged, handy and lightweight, and come equipped with a powerful battery pack. They cover the frequency range from 9 kHz to 3,6 GHz or 8 GHz. Depending on the options installed, they can also be used as two-port vector network analysers, as cable and antenna testers or as power meters.

In addition to their low weight and compact size, their vertical design makes the analysers handy field units. The user can easily reach all keys without having to put down the instrument. Flat menu structures and separate keys for frequently used functions help ensure efficient work. The large, high-contrast VGA colour display is easy to read even under difficult lighting conditions. The analysers conform to protection class IP51 and feature splash-proof, dust-protected connectors.

A displayed average noise level of -163 dBm at 2 GHz and a preamplifier that can be activated on all models can measure even very small signals reliably. In the presence of multiple strong signals, the analysers’ large-signal immunity helps prevent internal interference. Featuring third-order intercept of 15 dBm in the common mobile radio bands, the analysers perform comparably to high-end desktop models. The level measurement uncertainty is low and amounts to maximum 1 dB for measurements up to 3,6 GHz and maximum 1,5 dB up to 8 GHz.

Besides the base models, Rohde & Schwarz offers models with built-in tracking generator as well as models with an integrated VSWR bridge for vector network analysis. Sensors that are also available convert the units into high-precision power meters.

Windows software is supplied with the analysers for recording and evaluating measurement results. The software also supports maintenance teams with large equipment pools in administering instrument setups. This feature eliminates the need to configure each instrument separately. The analyser connects to a PC via LAN or USB interface. Since practically all functions can be controlled remotely, the handheld analysers can be integrated into customer-specific programs.
