Low profile connector for flexible printed circuits

28 March 2001 Interconnection

Hirose's FH18 series satisfies a demand for low profile FPC connectors with a height of only 1,8 mm and a contact pitch of 0,3 mm. This connector saves approximately 50% PCB real estate when compared with similar connectors that have a contact pitch of 0,5 mm.

The connector is available in 17, 21, 25, 27, 39 and 51 positions with all versions using two types of contacts. Half the contacts are of a low insertion force design and hold the FPC in place during assembly, whilst the remaining contacts have zero insertion force and are actuated by a rotating cover. The cover is moulded in a contrasting colour to provide easy visual conformation when fully closed and is hinged along its whole length for maximum strength.

FH18 is a surface mount connector that has been designed for easy assembly. The connector has a large flat top surface suitable for automatic placement with surface mount contacts on both sides of the connector. This allows PCB layout on a 0,6 mm pitch, making PCB design, processing and inspection as easy as possible whilst maintaining an ultra-miniature connector design.
