Philips Semiconductors has extended its leadership in 80C51 microcontrollers by announcing a new 80C51 family combining up to 64 KB of flash program memory, 2 KB of RAM and I2C serial interface supporting advanced computing applications. The Flash in-application programming (IAP)/in-system programming (ISP) capability of the P89C66x makes it suitable for applications such as modems, set-top boxes and card readers where its software can be upgraded over the Internet.
The P89C66x family is suited for applications written in high-level languages such as C and C++ and other designs where Flash memory is required in addition to a large amount of RAM and I2C serial interface. The P89C66x supports serial ISP of the flash memory with a built-in loader, and IAP, which allows the flash program memory to be reconfigured even while the application is running. The family achieves a 2X performance improvement over standard 80C51 devices by supporting six clocks per machine cycle.
Philips Semiconductors says the P89C66x family provides an ideal solution for intelligent platform management interface (IPMI) applications by combining Flash memory, a large amount of RAM and I2C, where I2C serves as the physical interface protocol in servers and high-end PC applications. The P89C66x family supports a programmable counter array, a watchdog timer, and a host of other standard features found in the 80C51+ core.
The P89C66x microcontroller family is available in PLCC and LQFP packages.
