Realtime clocks with built-in memory and CPU supervisors

14 March 2001 DSP, Micros & Memory

Xicor has introduced three highly integrated realtime clocks which combine realtime clock/calendar and memory functions with advanced supervisory functions. Realtime clock functions are standard building blocks required in laptop computers, cellular telephones, fax machines, utility meters and many other applications that need to record the time and date of random events.

The X1226, X1227 and X1228 are the latest additions to the Xicor RTC realtime clock family. The X1226 integrates 4 Kbits of EEPROM on-chip with the basic clock/calendar functions, while the X1227 and X1228 feature 2K bits of integrated EEPROM, clock/calendar functions and the CPU supervisory functions.

All three devices feature a flexible alarm architecture that allows designers to preset time or calendar driven alarms. Alarms can be set with resolutions of second, minute, hour, day, month or year, or can be programmed for a specific day of the week. An on-chip oscillator compensation feature eliminates the need for an external RC circuit, improves the accuracy of the RTC and makes the device easier for design engineers to use. In addition, the X1226 and X1228 feature a user-selectable frequency output option which enables designers to get a square wave of 32,768 kHz, 4096 Hz or 1 Hz out of the realtime clock.

The Xicor X1226, X1227 and X1228 support the industry standard two-wire interface for direct control and communications to the realtime clock/calendar and memory from a microcontroller.
