Multiphase converters deliver low power loss

16 April 2008 Power Electronics / Power Management

International Rectifier's iP2005A is a fully optimised power stage solution for high current synchronous buck multiphase converters used in gaming, computing and communications applications. It is optimised for very low EMI, eliminating the need for external snubber circuits in EMI-sensitive designs. By eliminating external snubbers, it reduces per phase power loss by up to 2,3 W compared to the previous generation device that required an external resistor and capacitor snubber with values of 2,2 Ω and 10 nF respectively. Available in a 7,7 x 7,7 x 1,7 mm LGA package, each iP2005A building block is capable of delivering up to 40 A at 0,8 to 5,5 V output. By using these building blocks in a multiphase system, currents up to 160 A can be achieved with an industry standard four-phase controller. In addition to an external PWM controller, only input and output capacitors and an output inductor at each phase are required.
