Highly adaptable, enclosed transformers

19 March 2008 Passive Components

The transformers of the Murrelektronik MTL range cover the performance category from 25 to 320 VA and, with newly developed components, the result is an innovative product with an attractive design, offering new and improved features.

The most significant modification is that the coil and iron core of the transformers are accommodated in a housing together with the terminals and wires. This greatly reduces the risk of wires breaking or tearing during transport or when exposed to shock and vibration. The newly designed double terminals allow two wires to be connected per terminal; captive screws are another convenient feature.

As standard they are designed for two output voltages – 24/48 V a.c. or 115/230 V a.c. The outputs are connected in parallel or in series via jumpers, in order to obtain the required secondary voltage or output rating. A bridge can also be plugged between a phase conductor and the PE conductor; as a result the protective device will immediately shut down in case of a failure. An insulation monitoring device, as required in standard installations, is thus not necessary. The position of the jumpers can be identified at the front of the unit, even with the cover closed, and unused jumpers are stored in the interior of the cover.

The primary side of the transformers is designed for 230 V and 400 V input voltages. Using multiple windings allows the transformers to be used in countries with different mains voltages. Additional terminals allow the adjustment of the output voltage by 15 V in both directions. This is important for applications subject to frequent voltage drops resulting from long cables.

Apart from the possibility to check the state of the jumper at a glance, the front of the transformers provides another helpful visual indication in the form of an LED indicating primary voltage.

The solid metal combination base plates provide a higher thermal endurance than plastic bases and are suitable for ambient temperatures up to 60°C, as well as having high endurance to vibration and shock. The transformers can be snapped on DIN rails and are also suitable for conventional keyhole mounting by means of screws.
