Current transducers now with current output

5 March 2008 Test & Measurement

LEM has added to its LTS range of current transducers designed to operate from a single 5 V power supply. The LTSP model measures positive and negative AC, DC and pulse currents on printed circuit boards and provides a current output instead of the voltage output provided by the other units in the family. This allows the LTSP to detect currents up to at least 14 times the nominal current.

The LTSP uses the same ASIC (application specific integrated circuit) as LEM's LTS and LTSR models. This device allows the high performance offered by the Hall-effect closed-loop current transducers to be offered in a package measuring only 22,2 x 10 x 24 mm (L x W x H). The LTSP provides better offset drifts than units based on traditional discrete technology, as well as access to the internal 2,5 V reference on a separate external pin, for interfacing with microcontrollers and analog-to-digital converters.

The transducer's multirange configuration has been designed for nominal currents of 8 A, 12 A and 25 A with galvanic isolation between the primary and output circuits. The current output allows users to manage the accuracy level and thermal drift by selecting the output resistance. The choice of the output resistor also allows the designer to adjust the gain to suit the application.
