Norwe has expanded its range of low-profile surface mount coilformers to include options fitted with U-shaped terminals. The two sides of the terminal allow automatic binding-on and soldering of the wires, leaving the PCB side of the terminal free from tin.
Automatic placing of the EFD-SMD2 coilformer and the ferrites is possible by using a snap-on cap. This cap is said to allow for much quicker assembly than glue such as Araldite, which requires the ferrite cores to be kept under constant pressure until it has hardened. The spring-action snap-on cap allows quick assembly of the coilformers and the cores in their correct positioning, and it has an opening on its side which allows for additional gluing. It also has a smooth top and can be used for pick and place.
