Using their expertise of almost 30 years with electroluminescent (EL) and atomic layer deposition (ALD) technologies, Planar developed new transparent displays.
Using ALD technology, where the layers used to coat the display are extremely thin, it is possible to create transparent layers on the display. As there are no liquids involved, the displays can be bent or curved to any imaginable shape. The technology has also been demonstrated on a mirror surface, and other even or uneven surfaces can be 'made into a display' with this unique technology.
Planar's EL display range combines long life time with endurance and great visual performance. Traditionally, electroluminescent displays use a non-reflective back electrode, which enables high contrast and over 160° viewing angle even in high ambient light. Additionally the displays have been designed for the most demanding conditions, whether they are extreme temperatures or high vibrations. The operating temperature range of Planar's EL displays is -50°C to +85°C. Properly mounted EL displays can withstand high shock loads, as well as severe vibration found in demanding applications.
The traditional applications for EL technology are medical equipment, like ventilators and defibrillators, defence applications, like armoured vehicles, and various industrial machinery and equipment. The transparent displays share the same visual performance and rugged characteristics of all EL displays. With the transparent EL, Planar are exploring new ideas relating to white goods, domestic appliances, high-end home interiors and design products, where the 'surprise element' possible with the transparent display technology could add value and make the product unique.
