The Technology Top 100 awards are part of an initiative between private and public enterprise to encourage innovation and technology development in South Africa. Initiated by the Da Vinci Institute and supported by the Department of Science and Technology, Eskom and the JSE Alternative Exchange, the awards showcase local technology and innovation and are aimed at making South Africa globally competitive.

The Water Angel was officially launched in October 2006 and is designed to prevent geyser leaks, bursts and explosions by shutting off the water and power supply and sounding an alarm should the device detect even the smallest leak or deviation in temperature. The device is expected to save the insurance industry millions in claims as a result of damage caused by geysers and water damage.
