AZ Displays has produced an LCD module that can survive temperatures as low as -40°C.
This solution not only enables LCD operation at extremely low temperatures, it also spares a user from having to adjust contrast as the temperature changes. The technology utilises a special heater made of a sheet of ITO glass that is placed next to the LCD. The heater is connected to the PCB by metal pins and is controlled by a thermistor, which automatically turns on the heater at -7 to -9°C.
These displays require an additional power supply of about 20 V besides the conventional voltage (normally 4,5 V) for the built-in LCD controller. Heater-based LCD modules can be used in a wide range of outdoor applications such as gas pumps, vending machines, payphones, automotive and military equipment.
