Needhams Electronics has introduced the EMP-100, a low-cost USB 2.0 universal device programmer with Windows support and low voltage capability. The EMP-100 supports devices that include EEPROM, EPROM, FLASH, PLD, CPLD, 8051, Microchip PIC, Atmel AVR, Serial EPROM, JTAG, and other specialty devices. To change device families, all that is required is to simply change or flip one of the Family Modules. Relays and discrete DAC-controlled analog drivers provide power and ground connections. The EMP-100 also supports in-system programming, via an adapter, on a number of devices.
The EMP-100 is highly portable at only 37,5 x 125 x 200 mm, with a 50 mm high power transformer, fitting into a briefcase or toolbox easily. The programmer, USB cable, transformer, and Family Modules, together weigh in at less than 1,3 kg. The EMP-100 is static-protected at the ZIF Socket, Family Module socket and power connector. It is housed in thick ABS plastic with no parts that can wear out, not even a fan or power switch.
The purpose of a Family Module is to allow the use of a few high quality pin drivers. Using a lower quality pin driver on each pin on the ZIF socket may result in reliability issues. The use of Family Modules translates to cleaner, more manageable waveforms and higher reliability.
