New materials for power applications

11 July 2007 Power Electronics / Power Management

EPCOS has developed two new ferrite materials whose improved properties make them suitable for the power range typical of SMPS (switch mode power supplies) and current meters.

N95 is distinguished by a high flux density of 525 mT at 25°C and 410 mT at 100°C. A special feature is its low power dissipation of only 250 kW/m³ and flux density of 50 mT at 500 kHz and 100°C. It has an optimum operating frequency range of 25 kHz to 500 kHz. Typical applications of N95 are power transformers in SMPS. This material is available in the E, ER and ETD cores.

T36 is distinguished particularly by its high linearity and can thus be used in applications such as current meters. It has an initial permeability of 7000 and a flux density of 400 mT at 25°C. Typical operating frequencies are 50 Hz to 100 kHz. It is available as a ring core.

Both materials may also be supplied in customised designs.
