Configurable 24-bit audio codec supports asynchronous operation

30 May 2007 Analogue, Mixed Signal, LSI

Texas Instruments has introduced a 24-bit audio codec that supports asynchronous operation, allowing the A/D converter and D/A converter to operate with independent clocks. The PCM3060 asynchronous audio codec is aimed at systems in which audio signals often need to be decoded and encoded at separate sampling rates. Applications include DVD/Blu-Ray recorders, digital TVs, settop boxes etc. The device offers design flexibility in that the D/A converter outputs can be configured as either single-ended or differential for better noise immunity. Its codec enables designers to select the control method among modes of three-wire SPI, two-wire I²C or hardware control, depending on design requirements. The PCM3060 codec can be internally set to synchronous mode where the A/D converter or the D/A converter clock can be selected as the clocking source when only one clock is required. It has low jitter sensitivity and a high signal-to-noise ratio of 105 dB to provide high audio performance.
