Maxim's new half-duplex RS485 transceivers have a small footprint (8-pin microDFN or SO package) suited for space-constrained applications such as motor control and mobile sensors. Measuring only 2 x 2 mm, the MAX13485E/ MAX13486E devices save over 50% board space compared to existing RS485 transceiver footprints claims the company. They feature enhanced ESD protection, fail-safe circuitry, and hot-swap capability. The MAX13485E offers ±15 kV ESD protection using the IEC 61000-4-2 Air-Gap Discharge Method, while both transceivers provide ±15 kV ESD protection using the Human Body Model. The MAX13485E's slew-rate-limited drivers provide reduced EMI and operation in environments with high levels of radiated noise for error-free transmission up to 500 Kbps. The MAX13486E allows data rates up to 16 Mbps. Additionally, these devices provide a 1/4-unit load receiver input impedance, allowing up to 128 transceivers on the bus.
