IDEA was formed in 1987 with the express intent to share best practices within the world's electronic component distribution industry. The organisation publishes a newsletter which is available to any visitor by download in PDF format. IDEA (www.ideaelectronics.com) is a federation of component distribution trade associations from several major countries.

The IDEA Council usually meets twice a year to focus on international standards and to share ideas within the global distribution industry. It hosts meetings within the industry to create cooperation and partnership. IDEA statistics are generated quarterly.

Current active members include Australia and New Zealand, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Sweden, UK, USA.
