Sirenza Microdevices announced that Luxim's long-life LIFI (light fidelity) light source, as demonstrated in a new generation of micro display projection HDTVs at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, is driven by Sirenza's PowerMax power amplifier module. The PowerMax PA provides LIFI with 170 W of RF output power. Where conventional bright lamps use metal electrodes to discharge electrical energy into a gas, with LIFI technology, RF energy is injected into a sealed gas capsule emitter. The mechanism is as if to make a small sealed light bulb without a metal connector and instead energise it with a closely placed antenna. Sirenza uses its proprietary XeMOS II laterally diffused metal oxide semiconductor (LDMOS) process technology to produce the devices used in the PowerMax PA. It says that this high-voltage process is suited to applications requiring ruggedness and high levels of efficient power.
