Paralympic and Olympic transmissions proved highly successful

Telstra used Agilent's accessFIBER network management solution to help guarantee the performance and availability of its optical Millennium Network during the Sydney 2000 Paralympic and Olympic Games. Agilent Technologies says that the network, which contains approximately 1,5 million km of optical fibre, handled 28bn telephone, audio, video and data transmissions flawlessly. Telstra, who was the official telecommunications supplier for both events, said that it saved time and money by using accessFIBER to identify and correct optical network problems quickly before they could disrupt audience experience.

"We witnessed some truly outstanding performances by the Millennium Network with the volume and quality of transmitted and broadcast data and images," said John Hunter, Telstra's General Manager for the 2000 Sydney Paralympic and Olympic Games. "Extensive planning and engineering contributed to our success, including the selection of the Agilent accessFIBER solution to help ensure that every optical network failure was detected and resolved before our customers were affected."

"The 2000 Paralympic and Olympic Games presented an unprecedented challenge for both world-class companies," said Tom White, General Manager of Agilent's Communications Solutions Group. "We delivered an outstanding performance by bringing together the best talents of both companies - Telstra's in-house technical experts and Agilent support staff from Malaysia and Germany - to implement the accessFIBER integrated network management solution that provided Telstra with total network control."

The International Broadcast Center (IBC) used Telstra's Millennium Network to televise more than 3400 hours of live action over the course of the events. The IBC, loaded with 75 000 m2 of broadcasting equipment, was the largest in Olympic history. Satellite dishes in Sydney and Perth transmitted images, commentary and data via 11 satellites. The Millennium Network broadcast coverage from both events to up to two thirds of the world's population, handled 500 000 simultaneous mobile phone calls, and provided telecommunications support for one million simultaneous e-mails.
