Link-circuit power capacitors save space

7 February 2007 Passive Components

Epcos has developed what it calls the ‘power capacitor chip’ (PCC) for link-circuit applications in industrial, automotive and medical electronics.

A special feature of these capacitors is their volume fill factor of nearly one. This is achieved thanks to stacked winding technology, which currently offers the best volume efficiency.

This series covers the capacitance range from 100 μF to 3000 μF at operating voltages between 100 and 1000 V d.c. The permissible operating temperature is between -40 and 105°C, but these capacitors can also withstand peak values of 125°C for brief periods. They have a ripple current capability of up to several 100 A, depending on the type.

Thanks to their extremely low series inductance of up to 20 nH, the PCCs are particularly suitable for applications with fast and steep switching edges such as IGBT frequency converters. They have an operating life of about 10 000 hours.

PCCs permit numerous customer-specific designs. For example, hybrid converters in automotive electronics with highly space-saving designs can be implemented in this way.
