Compact medical AC/DC switchers offer flexibility and reliability

12 July 2006 Power Electronics / Power Management

XP Power's latest medical, low-profile, AC/DC switchers, the PBM200 (200 W) and PBM300 (300 W), combine the flexibility of up to four outputs with an MTBF of over 300 000 hours (MIL-HDBK-217F at 25°C) and full medical agency safety approvals.

The PBM200 measures 177,8 x 101,6 x 38,1 mm and the PBM300, 190,5 x 114,3 x 44,5 mm. There are 22 models in the PBM200 series and 21 in the PBM300 family. Output voltages are from 3,3 to 48 V d.c. in single, dual, triple and quad-output versions. Designed primarily for medical applications, the PBM200 comes complete with a cover and integral fan and produces 200 W. The unit is also available as a 100 W, convection cooled, U-channel supply. The equivalent PBM300 ratings are 300 W and 150 W respectively.

PBM series power supplies have dual input fusing. The units feature universal AC inputs of 90 to 264 V a.c., power density of up to 4,76 W per cubic inch and up to 80% efficiency.

All models offer remote on/off and single output versions also have a remote sense function to compensate for up to 0,5 V drop between output supply terminal and load. Overtemperature, overload, overvoltage and short circuit protection are all built in.
