SA firsts: the cellular MemoCam at Securex

12 July 2006 News

Apart from Securex being SA's largest security trade show, a big attraction is that a multitude of South African security industry firsts are announced there. One of the unique 'firsts' seen at the show was Video Domain Technologies' D-V58/CELL, which is a portable cellular communications-enabled 'MemoCam' that enables notification via cellphone and/or e-mail whenever an event occurs, with optional jpg image attachment functionality.

Brought into the country by Emergency Reaction Services, the MemoCam is a standalone, miniature digital video recorder with integrated video motion detection. Events are stored on a removable SD memory card that can be up to 2 GB in size. The unit has a sleep mode (10 mA) that enables low battery usage.

Nadine Maram, product manager at Emergency Reaction Services, adds that the D-V58 is recommended for a large variety of applications where discretion, mobility, quality video, low power usage, easy set up and no daily maintenance are important factors.

The D-V58/CELL has been developed to use the advanced GPRS Class 12 cellular platform, which is 15 times faster than regular GSM, ensuring high-speed transfer of images to the user over any GSM/GPRS network in the world. The solution covers 900/1800/1900 frequencies, which enables flexibility and universal use. It also features image encryption functions that ensure the secure transmission of information.

Maram says that the advanced cellular communications platform enables the following operations to be performed via cellphone by the user: receive pre-defined SMS messages or e-mails informing users that there has been an event; receive jpg images as attachments within the e-mails; send selected commands via SMS messages, eg: arm, disarm, configure and more; receive image attachment in encrypted format where requested; get status of the unit itself.

"The integrated VMD allows for recording of events of interest, reducing required storage space and enabling recorded events to be stored on removable SD card," she adds. "The unit is easy to install and easy to hide making it perfect for covert recording and for situations where mobility is required."
